2 Chronicles 17:1-6: in context

Jehoshaphat succeeds his father Asa as king of Judah, and the Chronicler gives him a glowing summary. The LORD was with him, because he walked in the early ways of his father David, sought the God of his father rather than the Baals, and walked in his commandments instead of following the ways of the northern kingdom. So God established the kingdom in his hand; he grew rich and honored. And then a striking phrase: his heart was courageous, or lifted up, in the ways of the LORD, so that he went further and removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.

One phrase stands out: his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD. Usually when scripture says a heart was lifted up, it means pride, and it is a bad sign, the swelling of self that comes before a fall. Here it is turned to a good use. Jehoshaphat's heart was lifted up, but in the ways of the LORD, a holy boldness, a courage and confidence that grew not from ego but from walking with God. There is such a thing as a lifted-up heart that is good, a heart made bold and confident by seeking God, that then dares to do hard things for him. That courage is what let Jehoshaphat go after the entrenched idolatry, the high places, that even good kings before him had left standing. His confidence was in God, and it made him brave to attack what needed attacking. The passage models a right kind of boldness, not the pride that lifts a heart against God, but the courage that lifts a heart in his ways, and then acts on it.

Is my heart ever lifted up in the ways of the LORD, made bold by walking with him to do the hard, faithful things, or is the only lifting-up I know the pride that goes before a fall?
