1 Chronicles 8:1-7: in context

This chapter opens the genealogy of Benjamin, the youngest of Jacob's sons and the smallest of Israel's tribes. It lists Benjamin's sons and their descendants, families of Geba and others, some of whom were carried into captivity, an unremarkable roster of names in the tribal record.

There is nothing dramatic in these verses themselves, but the tribe they trace is worth a thought. Benjamin was the smallest tribe, born of Jacob's beloved Rachel, who died giving him birth; nearly wiped out entirely in the book of Judges; the runt of Israel's twelve. And yet from this least of the tribes came Israel's first king, Saul, and centuries later the apostle Paul, who called himself a Benjamite, the man who carried the gospel across the empire. The smallest tribe produced outsized figures at the hinges of the story. It is a quiet reminder that God does not measure by size or prominence; the least significant line in the register can be the one through which he does something enormous. Benjamin had every reason to think of itself as minor, easily overlooked, and God kept using it. The obscure names in a genealogy of the smallest tribe are a standing rebuke to the assumption that God works only through the large and impressive. He delights, again and again, in bringing the great thing out of the small and overlooked.
