Exodus 25:23-30: in context

23“You shall make a table of acacia wood. Its length shall be two cubits, and its width a cubit, and its height one and a half cubits. 24You shall overlay it with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it. 25You shall make a rim of a hand width around it. You shall make a golden molding on its rim around it. 26You shall make four rings of gold for it, and put the rings in the four corners that are on its four feet. 27The rings shall be close to the rim, for places for the poles to carry the table. 28You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be carried with them. 29You shall make its dishes, its spoons, its ladles, and its bowls with which to pour out offerings. You shall make them of pure gold. 30You shall set bread of the presence on the table before me always.

At Sinai, God gives Moses long, exact instructions for the tabernacle, the portable tent where he will dwell among the people, and for each thing inside it. This passage covers one piece of furniture: a table for the Holy Place, built of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold, fitted with rings and carrying poles so it can travel with the camp. On it sits the bread of the presence.

The details are precise. The measurements are given to the half cubit, the gold is pure, the poles stay in their rings so the table can be moved without being handled. And the reason for all of it is the last line: bread set before God always. Twelve loaves, one for each tribe of Israel, laid out fresh each week, with the fuller rule spelled out later in Leviticus 24. It was called the bread of the presence, or more literally the bread of the face, because it rested before the face of God.

Israel's neighbors set food before their idols as meals for the gods, who were thought to need feeding. Here the same gesture means something else. The bread is not God's dinner but a weekly sign that all twelve tribes are held before him, laid out and renewed whether or not anyone is watching. What have I stopped setting out because I stopped feeling it was noticed?
