1 Chronicles 2:18-24: in context

18Caleb the son of Hezron became the father of children by Azubah his wife, and by Jerioth; and these were her sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19Azubah died, and Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. 20Hur became the father of Uri, and Uri became the father of Bezalel. 21Afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he took as wife when he was sixty years old; and she bore him Segub. 22Segub became the father of Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. 23Geshur and Aram took the towns of Jair from them, with Kenath, and its villages, even sixty cities. All these were the sons of Machir the father of Gilead. 24After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, Abijah, Hezron’s wife, bore him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.

Chronicles opens with nine chapters of names, compiled after the exile to reconnect the people who came home with the ancestry that made them a people. These verses are a patch of that map, running through the descendants of Hezron in the tribe of Judah, the kind of passage most readers pass over on the way to a story.

The names are ordinary until one is not. Hur's grandson, a few words into verse twenty, is Bezalel. That is the Bezalel whom Exodus says God filled with skill and craftsmanship to build the tabernacle, the tent where Israel met God in the wilderness. The man who made the sacred furniture is here as a single link in a chain, with no note attached. The register also records Hezron marrying at sixty and fathering a son, and a descendant named Jair holding twenty-three towns across the Jordan in Gilead, before Geshur and Aram took them away.

This is how Chronicles works. It keeps the whole line, the craftsman and the late-married father and the towns won and lost, because the point is that the people are one continuous body, and every name held a life. Whose name in my own family have I filed under a list, without asking what they made?
