1 Chronicles 12:8-15: in context

8Some Gadites joined David in the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for war, who could handle shield and spear; whose faces were like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as the gazelles on the mountains: 9Ezer the chief, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, 10Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth, 11Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh, 12Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth, 13Jeremiah the tenth, and Machbannai the eleventh. 14These of the sons of Gad were captains of the army. He who was least was equal to one hundred, and the greatest to one thousand. 15These are those who went over the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed all its banks; and they put to flight all who lived in the valleys, both toward the east and toward the west.

David is not king yet in this passage. He is a wanted man, hiding in the wilderness strongholds while Saul still sits on the throne and hunts him. Chronicles is listing the fighters who left the standing kingdom to join a fugitive who could promise them nothing.

The Gadites in these verses get a full portrait. They are trained soldiers who could handle shield and spear, with faces like lions and the speed of gazelles on the hills, and the least of them was worth a hundred men and the greatest a thousand. Then one concrete scene fixes the whole thing in time. They crossed the Jordan in the first month, when the river had overflowed all its banks, and drove out everyone living in the valleys on both sides. The first month was the spring flood, the worst season to cross, and they crossed anyway to reach David.

Chronicles keeps this list because it remembers who came early. These men attached themselves to David while it was dangerous and unrewarded, when backing him meant crossing a flooded river toward a cave instead of a palace. The kingdom that came later was built on people who arrived before there was a kingdom. Who am I willing to stand with now, while it still costs something and guarantees nothing?
