Matthew 17:17-21: in context

When the disciples fail to cast a demon out of a suffering boy, Jesus does it, and afterward they ask him privately why they could not. He answers, because of your little faith. And then he says something that has encouraged the faltering ever since: most certainly I tell you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. The issue was not the greatness of their faith but its smallness; and even the smallest genuine faith, Jesus says, can do the impossible.

Jesus' words about the mustard seed reorient how we think about faith. A mustard seed was proverbially tiny, the smallest of seeds; and Jesus says that faith even that small can move mountains, that nothing will be impossible to it. The point is striking: what matters is not the size or strength of our faith but its presence and its object. We do not need great faith to accomplish great things; we need even small faith in a great God. The disciples' problem was not that their faith was not large enough in some measurable way, but that it was faltering, barely present. Even the smallest genuine faith, resting in God, can do what seems impossible, because its power is not in itself but in the God it trusts. This is deeply encouraging for those who feel their faith is small. We can be discouraged by the smallness of our faith, feeling that we do not have enough, that our faith is too weak to accomplish anything, too small to matter. Jesus' words answer this: faith like a mustard seed, tiny as it is, can move mountains. The issue is not the quantity of our faith but whether we have it, and in whom it rests. A small faith in a great God accomplishes more than a great confidence in ourselves; for the power is in God, not in the size of our faith. Increase our faith, the apostles asked; and Jesus pointed them to the mustard seed, redirecting them from the size of their faith to its object. This frees us from despair over the smallness of our faith. We need not wait until our faith is great before we can trust God for great things; even faith like a mustard seed, small and faltering, resting in a great God, can do the impossible. When we feel our faith is small, we are not thereby cut off from God's working; small faith in a great God moves mountains. And when even our small faith falters, we can pray, as another did, I believe; help my unbelief. This calls us to exercise the faith we have, small as it is, in a great God. The disciples' faith was little, and Jesus pointed them to the mustard seed: even that small faith, in a great God, can move mountains and do the impossible. And we too are called not to despair over the smallness of our faith, but to exercise it, small as it is, in the great God who works through even a mustard seed of trust, for whom nothing is impossible.

Am I discouraged by the smallness of my faith, feeling that it is too weak or too small to accomplish anything or to matter, and can Jesus' words that faith like a grain of mustard seed can move mountains, so that nothing is impossible, redirect me from the size of my faith to its object, the great God in whom it rests, so that I exercise the faith I have, small and faltering as it is, in a God for whom nothing is impossible, praying where it falters, I believe, help my unbelief?
