Numbers 2:1-6: in context

1The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2“The children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses. They shall encamp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it. 3“Those who encamp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Judah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 4His division, and those who were counted of them, were seventy-four thousand six hundred. 5“Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar. The prince of the children of Issachar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar. 6His division, and those who were counted of it, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

God gives Israel the plan for their camp: each tribe under its own banner, arranged by divisions, all of them pitched around the Tent of Meeting in the center. Judah on the east, Issachar beside them, and so on around the compass, every family with an assigned place, and the dwelling of God at the heart of it all.

The arrangement is a picture of ordered life. No tribe is left to wander or guess where it belongs; each has a standard and a place. And the whole thing is oriented around one center, not a king's tent or a marketplace, but the place where God met them. Everything took its bearings from the presence of God at the middle. A life finds its order the same way, not by arranging the pieces first, but by putting God's presence at the center and letting the rest take its place around him.
