Amos 2:1-5: in context

1The LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime; 2but I will send a fire on Moab, and it will devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab will die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet; 3and I will cut off the judge from among them, and will kill all its princes with him,” says the LORD. 4The LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have rejected the LORD’s law, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have led them astray, after which their fathers walked; 5but I will send a fire on Judah, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.”

Amos pronounces God's judgment on nation after nation, and the charge against Moab is unusual. It is not for something done to Israel, but for burning the bones of the king of Edom into lime, an act of cruelty against a dead enemy. God takes notice of a desecration aimed at a hated rival, a vengeance carried past death itself, and counts it as a transgression he will not overlook.

What is striking is whose dignity God defends. Edom was no friend of Israel, and its king was Moab's enemy, yet God is offended by the cruelty done to his corpse. Hatred that will not stop even at the grave, that must degrade an enemy's remains, crosses a line God notices. It is a warning against the kind of grudge that keeps going past any purpose, refusing an opponent even the dignity owed the dead. God sees how we treat those we despise, and even an enemy's bones are not beneath his concern.

Does any grudge of mine run so deep that I would deny an opponent even basic dignity, forgetting that God is watching how I treat them?
