1 Kings 21:16-20: in context

16When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. 17The LORD’s word came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18“Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who dwells in Samaria. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it. 19You shall speak to him, saying, ‘The LORD says, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ You shall speak to him, saying, ‘The LORD says, “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours.”’” 20Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do that which is evil in the LORD’s sight.

Ahab has gotten what he wanted. Naboth, who refused to sell his vineyard, has been framed and killed, and the king goes down to take possession of the land at last. There God's word meets him through Elijah: have you killed, and also taken possession? And then the sentence: where dogs licked Naboth's blood, they will lick yours. Ahab's response says everything: have you found me, my enemy?

Two things stand out. First, Elijah's diagnosis, that Ahab has sold himself to do evil. The king did not stumble into this; he handed himself over, traded his integrity for a plot of ground he coveted. And second, Ahab greets the man who tells him the truth as his enemy. The prophet has come, at real risk, to name the sin before it consumes him, and Ahab can only see an adversary. The one who confronts us honestly feels like an opponent, when in fact he may be the last mercy standing between us and ruin.

Whom have I treated as an enemy for telling me the truth about myself, and what have I sold myself to obtain?
