Genesis 16:1-5: in context

1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my servant. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. 4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. May the LORD judge between me and you.”

Years pass and God's promise of a child has not come. So Sarai proposes a shortcut: the LORD has kept me from bearing, she says, so go to my servant Hagar; perhaps I will build a family through her. Abram agrees. Hagar conceives, and at once the household turns bitter, Hagar looks down on Sarai, Sarai blames Abram, and the woman she gave away becomes the source of her grief.

This is what it looks like to help God's promise along by our own scheming. Tired of waiting, they engineer a solution, and it works in the narrow sense, a child is coming, and it wounds everyone involved. The impatience that could not trust God's timing manufactured a fix that bred contempt, jealousy, and blame, consequences that would echo for generations. God's promise did not need their contrivance. Our attempts to force his blessing on our schedule tend to produce exactly this: a technically successful shortcut trailing a long wake of pain.
