Genesis 38:17-21: in context

17He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?” 18He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him. 19She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. 20Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her. 21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

This is a sordid episode in the family line of Judah. Judah, not recognizing his widowed daughter-in-law Tamar behind a veil, takes her for a prostitute and promises a young goat in payment. She asks for a pledge to hold until it arrives, and he hands over his signet, his cord, and his staff, the tokens of his very identity. Later he sends the goat to redeem them, but the woman is nowhere to be found.

Notice what Judah gave away in the moment: his seal and his staff, the ancient equivalent of his signature and his identification. He surrendered the proof of who he was for a passing encounter he assumed no one would ever connect to him. But those tokens do not vanish; they are in Tamar's keeping, and they will surface at exactly the moment they can convict him. Secret sin feels anonymous while we are in it, but it has a way of leaving our fingerprints behind. What Judah did in the dark left evidence with his name on it.

What have I done in the dark, assuming it was anonymous, that has quietly left evidence with my own name on it?
