1 Samuel 25:9-13: in context

9When David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal all those words in the name of David, and waited. 10Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants who break away from their masters these days. 11Shall I then take my bread, my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who I don’t know where they come from?” 12So David’s young men turned on their way and went back, and came and told him all these words. 13David said to his men, “Every man put on his sword!” Every man put on his sword. David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David, and two hundred stayed by the baggage.

David's men have politely asked the wealthy Nabal for provisions, reminding him that David's band had protected his shepherds. Nabal answers with sneering contempt: who is David? Am I to take my bread and give it to men who come from who knows where? When the insult is reported, David's response is immediate and terrifying: strap on your swords. He sets out with four hundred armed men to wipe out Nabal's entire household.

Look at the leap. A rich man's rude refusal, a wounded ego, and within a breath David is riding to commit a massacre. This is the same David who spared Saul twice; here, stung by contempt, he is ready to slaughter every male in Nabal's house over a snub. It is a sobering picture of how fast a bruised pride can escalate into disproportionate rage, even in a good man. Only the quick wisdom of Abigail, in the verses that follow, will stop him from a bloodbath he would have regretted forever.
