Genesis 32:27-32: in context

27He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”. 28He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there. 30Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh. 32Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.

Jacob has wrestled through the night with a mysterious man, and as dawn breaks he will not let go without a blessing. The stranger asks his name, then renames him: no longer Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed. Jacob names the place Peniel, the face of God, saying, I have seen God face to face and lived. And as the sun rises, he walks on, limping, his hip wrenched from the struggle.

He leaves the encounter changed in two ways at once: with a new name and a permanent limp. The blessing and the wound come together. You do not meet God like this and walk away untouched; something is given, and something is marked. Jacob's limp would follow him the rest of his life, a bodily reminder of the night he clung to God and would not let go until he was blessed. Real encounters with God tend to leave both, a deeper identity and a lasting mark, and the limp is not a defeat but a memory of holy struggle.

Am I willing to wrestle with God until he blesses me, and to carry the limp such an encounter may leave as a mark of it?
