Galatians 5:22-26: in context
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. 25If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. 26Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.
Paul names the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things, he says, there is no law. And he adds the way it grows: if we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit, not becoming conceited, provoking and envying one another.
The word is fruit, and it matters. Fruit is not manufactured; it grows, quietly and organically, from a living source. Paul does not call these things the achievements of the Spirit or the works of the disciplined; he calls them fruit, what naturally grows in a life rooted in the Spirit. That reframes how they come. I cannot white-knuckle my way into patience or squeeze out joy by effort; I can only stay connected to the source and let it bear its fruit through me. The command is to walk by the Spirit, to keep in step with him, and the character follows as fruit follows a healthy tree. Trying to produce the fruit while neglecting the root is exhausting and futile.
Am I trying to manufacture love, patience, and joy by sheer effort, or cultivating a life in step with the Spirit from which they grow as fruit?
