Titus 1:10-16: in context

10For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11whose mouths must be stopped: men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake. 12One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. 15To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16They profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

Paul warns Titus about false teachers on Crete, empty talkers and deceivers who upset whole households for the sake of dishonest gain. He ends his description with a line that cuts to the heart of the problem: they profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him; they are unfit for any good work. The claim and the life do not match.

They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny him. That is a stark contradiction, a mouth that says one thing and a life that says the opposite. It is easy to profess; the words cost little. The test is whether the deeds confirm or contradict the claim. A person can hold the right beliefs, use the right language, even teach others, and have a life that quietly denies every word of it. And the denial is not in what they say but in what they do. This turns the mirror on all of us who profess to know God. The question is not only what I claim, but whether anyone watching my actual conduct would conclude that I know him.

Does my life confirm what I profess about knowing God, or would someone watching my actual deeds conclude that I deny him?
