Numbers 1:22-27: in context

22Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those who were counted of it, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war: 23those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 24Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war: 25those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty. 26Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war: 27those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.

The book of Numbers takes its name from passages like this one, the muster of Israel for the wilderness march. Tribe by tribe the count is taken: Simeon, Gad, Judah, each numbered by families and fathers' houses, every man of fighting age recorded one by one.

The repetition reads as tedious, but the counting is making a point. God does not send a faceless mass into the desert. Each man of Israel is registered by name, his household and tribe known. To be numbered here is to be held accountable, yes, but also to be known, not lost in the crowd of hundreds of thousands. The same God who keeps this careful list is the one who later says he knows the number of the hairs on a head.

Do I trust that God knows me by name and household, even when I feel like one more number in a long list?
