Exodus 25:1-9: in context

1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the children of Israel, that they take an offering for me. From everyone whose heart makes him willing you shall take my offering. 3This is the offering which you shall take from them: gold, silver, bronze, 4blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats’ hair, 5rams’ skins dyed red, sea cow hides, acacia wood, 6oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense, 7onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate. 8Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. 9According to all that I show you, the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all of its furniture, even so you shall make it.

God tells Moses to collect an offering to build the sanctuary, and he adds a striking condition: take it from everyone whose heart makes him willing. Then the list of materials, gold and silver and bronze, dyed yarns and fine linen, acacia wood, oil, spices, and precious stones. And the reason for all of it: let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.

The materials are costly, but the condition is a willing heart. God will not build his dwelling out of grudging or coerced gifts; he wants what is given gladly. And the purpose is astonishing when you sit with it. The God whose presence filled Sinai with fire and smoke asks for a tent, so that he can live in the middle of the camp, close enough to be a neighbor. The value of the gold matters less than the reason it is gathered: nearness.

What do I give to God freely, from a genuinely willing heart, rather than out of pressure or obligation?
