Mark 9:7-11: in context

7A cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” 8Suddenly looking around, they saw no one with them any more, except Jesus only. 9As they were coming down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what things they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10They kept this saying to themselves, questioning what the “rising from the dead” meant. 11They asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

On the mountain a cloud overshadows Peter, James, and John, and a voice comes out of it: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Then, as suddenly as it began, it is over, and they look around and see no one but Jesus only. Coming down, he tells them to say nothing until the Son of Man has risen, and they puzzle privately over what rising from the dead could mean.

Strip the command from the cloud down to its core and it is a single word: listen. In a moment overflowing with glory, Moses and Elijah, the shining, the voice from heaven, God does not say admire him, or build him a shrine, or capture the moment. He says listen to him. And then everything fades until only Jesus is left. The whole point of the vision is to send the three back down the mountain to the plain voice of the Son they will keep walking beside.

In the moments I long for a spiritual high, do I hear the one instruction that matters, listen to him, or reach to hold onto the experience instead?
