Exodus 34:15-20: in context

15“Don’t make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, lest they play the prostitute after their gods, and sacrifice to their gods, and one call you and you eat of his sacrifice; 16and you take of their daughters to your sons, and their daughters play the prostitute after their gods, and make your sons play the prostitute after their gods. 17“You shall make no cast idols for yourselves. 18“You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month Abib you came out of Egypt. 19“All that opens the womb is mine; and all your livestock that is male, the firstborn of cow and sheep. 20You shall redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a lamb. If you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. You shall redeem all the firstborn of your sons. No one shall appear before me empty.

As God renews the covenant, he warns Israel bluntly against making treaties with the peoples of the land. Such alliances, he says, will draw them into idolatry through shared sacrifices and through marriages that lead their sons after other gods. Make no cast idols. Keep the feast of unleavened bread. And then: all that opens the womb is mine; redeem your firstborn; no one shall appear before me empty-handed.

The warning is not fear of outsiders but clear sight about influence. God knows that close alliances and marriages shape the heart, and that a seat at another god's table slowly pulls a people away. The command to give him the firstborn says the same thing from the other side: the first and best belong to God, not the leftovers. Guard what forms you, and give God the first place rather than whatever is left when everything else has had its claim.
