Ezra 8:6-10: in context
6Of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan; and with him fifty males. 7Of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah; and with him seventy males. 8Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael; and with him eighty males. 9Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel; and with him two hundred eighteen males. 10Of the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah; and with him one hundred sixty males.
This is a roster: the heads of families who came up from Babylon with Ezra, each named, each with the count of the men who traveled with him. Of the sons of Adin, Ebed, and fifty men; of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah, and seventy. Just names and numbers, easy to skim past.
But behind every line is a household that chose to leave a settled, comfortable life in Babylon and make a long, dangerous journey back to a ruined homeland to rebuild the worship of God. God has these people recorded by name and clan, each group counted. The list honors ordinary people who answered a costly call, and it quietly insists that God keeps track of who actually came, not who merely admired the idea from a distance. A forgettable name on a manifest is written down and remembered by God.
Am I willing to be one of the named who actually came, who left comfort to answer God's call, even if my name lands only on a forgettable list?
