1 Maccabees 9:1-6: in context

1Demetrius heard that Nicanor had fallen with his forces in battle, and he sent Bacchides and Alcimus again into the land of Judah a second time, and the right wing of his army with them. 2They went by the way that leads to Gilgal, and encamped against Mesaloth, which is in Arbela, and took possession of it, and killed many people. 3The first month of the one hundred fifty-second year, they encamped against Jerusalem. 4Then they marched away and went to Berea with twenty thousand infantry and two thousand cavalry. 5Judas was encamped at Elasa with three thousand chosen men. 6They saw the multitude of the forces, that they were many, and they were terrified. Many slipped away out of the army. There were not left of them more than eight hundred men.

The Seleucid king sends a large army under Bacchides and Alcimus against Judah again. They march toward Jerusalem, and Judas Maccabeus is camped at Elasa with three thousand chosen men. But when his soldiers see the size of the enemy force, they are terrified, and many slip quietly away, until only eight hundred are left with him.

This is the opening of Judas's last battle, and it begins not with courage but with fear and desertion. Faced with overwhelming odds, most of the men melt away into the dark, and Judas is left with a fraction of his force. The passage is honest about how fear thins the ranks the moment the danger looks impossible. It sets up the costly stand of the few who stay. Sometimes faithfulness means standing with the eight hundred who remain when the crowd has fled, even with no guarantee of how it will end.

When the odds turn overwhelming and others slip away, am I among those who stay, or among those who quietly disappear?
