Job 1:12-16: in context

12The LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. 13It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14that a messenger came to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

God permits Satan to strike everything Job has, but sets a firm boundary: only do not lay a hand on Job himself. And then, on a single day, disaster after disaster falls. A messenger arrives: the Sabeans have carried off the oxen and killed the servants. While he is still speaking, another comes: fire has fallen and burned the sheep and the shepherds. Each one ends the same way, I alone have escaped to tell you, and more are still coming.

This is the beginning of Job's testing, and it should be met with deep compassion. But notice the frame the reader is given: nothing touches Job outside what God permits, and the limits are set by God, not by Satan. The calamities come in a relentless cascade, each blow landing before he can absorb the last. It is the experience of compounding, overwhelming loss that many people know, one thing after another with no room to breathe. The book does not explain it away, but it insists from the very start that even this falls within a boundary God has set, and that God has not lost control, even as everything seems to collapse.

When loss comes in waves and I cannot understand why, can I hold, even barely, to the truth that nothing reaches me outside the boundary God has set?
