Genesis 12:7-13: in context

7The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” He built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. 8He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the LORD’s name. 9Abram traveled, still going on toward the South. 10There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11When he had come near to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at. 12It will happen that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive. 13Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you.”

God appears to Abram and promises the land to his offspring, and Abram builds an altar and calls on the name of the LORD. He is a man of worship and faith. But then a famine drives him toward Egypt, and as he nears it, fear grips him: Sarai is beautiful, and he is sure the Egyptians will kill him to take her. So he tells her to say she is his sister, to save his own life.

The same chapter shows Abram at his best and his worst. He builds altars, worships, calls on God's name, a genuine man of faith. And then, seized by fear of famine and of Pharaoh, he lies about his wife to protect himself, willing to endanger her to save his own skin. The father of faith is not a flawless hero; the very man God had just called stumbles almost at once into fear and deception. Faith and failure can live in the same person in the same season, and Scripture does not hide it. God's promise rests not on Abram's perfection but on God's own faithfulness.

Does it comfort or unsettle me that even Abram, the father of faith, stumbled into fear and deception, and that God's promise held anyway?
