Leviticus 25:8-12: in context

8“‘You shall count off seven Sabbaths of years, seven times seven years; and there shall be to you the days of seven Sabbaths of years, even forty-nine years. 9Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. 10You shall make the fiftieth year holy, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee to you; and each of you shall return to his own property, and each of you shall return to his family. 11That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee to you. In it you shall not sow, neither reap that which grows of itself, nor gather from the undressed vines. 12For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you. You shall eat of its increase out of the field.

Every fiftieth year is to be a Jubilee. On the Day of Atonement the trumpet sounds throughout the land, and liberty is proclaimed to all its inhabitants: each person returns to his own property, and each to his family. The land is not sown that year; debts are released, the enslaved go free, and ancestral land is restored.

The Jubilee is one of the beautiful institutions of the law. Every fifty years the whole economy resets: land returns to its original families, the enslaved are freed, debts are cancelled. It kept wealth from concentrating forever in a few hands and gave every family a fresh start, a built-in mercy against permanent poverty and irreversible loss. And it begins on the Day of Atonement, tying liberty to being made right with God: the forgiveness of sin and the release of debts sound the very same trumpet. Jesus opened his ministry announcing this year of the Lord's favor, the true Jubilee of release he came to bring.

Do I long for and live out the Jubilee spirit, release, restoration, and freedom, and do I know the deeper liberty Christ proclaims?
