2 Kings 15:8-12: in context

8In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months. 9He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, as his fathers had done. He didn’t depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. 10Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and struck him before the people and killed him, and reigned in his place. 11Now the rest of the acts of Zechariah, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 12This was the LORD’s word which he spoke to Jehu, saying, “Your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” So it came to pass.

Zechariah, son of Jeroboam, reigns over Israel just six months, doing evil like his fathers, and is assassinated by Shallum, who seizes the throne. The narrator pauses, amid the bloody and unstable succession, to note something: this fulfilled the word the LORD had spoken to Jehu, that his sons to the fourth generation would sit on the throne of Israel. And so it came to pass.

In the midst of coups and assassinations, the narrator points out that this outcome fulfilled exactly what God had told Jehu generations earlier, that his line would hold the throne to the fourth generation, and no further. Zechariah was that fourth generation, and his brief, evil reign ends the promise precisely on schedule. Even in the chaos of Israel's violent politics, God's word runs its exact course; what he said to Jehu comes true to the letter, generations later. Human history can look like random violence, and yet God's word is quietly, precisely being fulfilled through it all.

Do I trust that beneath the seeming chaos of events, God's word is being fulfilled exactly as he said, on his timetable and not a day off?
