Exodus 2:19-25: in context

19They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.” 20He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” 21Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter. 22She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.” 23In the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage. 24God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25God saw the children of Israel, and God understood.

Moses settles in Midian, marries Zipporah, and names his son Gershom, saying, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land. Time passes. The king of Egypt dies, and Israel groans under its slavery and cries out, and their cry rises up to God. And then the passage stacks four short verbs: God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant, and God saw the people of Israel, and God knew.

To a people who must have felt utterly forgotten in their long slavery, this is the turning point, not yet a rescue, but the assurance that God has not forgotten them. His remembering does not mean he had lost track; it means he now moves to act on his covenant. Before Moses is even called, before a single plague, God has already heard, remembered, seen, and known. The whole deliverance begins here, in God's attention to the cry of the oppressed.

When I feel forgotten in a long, hard season, can I trust that God has heard, remembered, seen, and known, even before I see him act?
