2 Chronicles 36:9-14: in context

9Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight. 10At the return of the year, King Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, with the valuable vessels of the LORD’s house, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem. 11Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 12He did that which was evil in the LORD his God’s sight. He didn’t humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the LORD’s mouth. 13He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God; but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel. 14Moreover all the chiefs of the priests and the people trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the LORD’s house which he had made holy in Jerusalem.

The end races toward Judah. Jehoiachin reigns three months and does evil, and Nebuchadnezzar carries him to Babylon. Zedekiah reigns eleven years and does evil, and the text singles out his failure: he did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the LORD; he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD. And the leaders and priests grew more and more faithless, until they defiled the very temple God had made holy.

The word of God was still coming, the prophet still speaking, but the king would not bend. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning, and the corruption spread from the top down through priests and people until the house of God itself was polluted. A nation does not fall in a single moment; it falls through repeated refusals to humble itself and turn while the warnings still come. The door to repentance stayed open, and they kept deliberately shutting it.

When God's word still comes to me and calls me to turn, do I humble myself, or stiffen my neck against it like Zedekiah?
