Acts 8:24-28: in context

24Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that none of the things which you have spoken happen to me.” 25They therefore, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the Good News to many villages of the Samaritans. 26Then an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise, and go toward the south to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert.” 27He arose and went; and behold, there was a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship. 28He was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.

After the apostles preach through the Samaritan villages, an angel sends Philip in a surprising direction: arise and go south, to the desert road that runs down from Jerusalem to Gaza. He goes, and there he finds an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official in charge of the queen's entire treasury, returning from worship in Jerusalem, sitting in his chariot reading the prophet Isaiah.

God's guidance here is remarkable. He sends Philip away from a fruitful ministry in Samaria to a lonely desert road, seemingly toward nothing, to meet one man. And that one man is a foreigner, a eunuch, a seeker who had traveled far to worship and was hungrily reading Scripture he did not yet understand. God had arranged a divine appointment: a prepared seeker on an empty road, and a willing messenger sent to meet him. God cares about the single seeker enough to redirect an evangelist across a desert for one hungry heart. Sometimes obedience means leaving the crowd for the one.

Am I willing to be led away from the obvious "fruitful" place to meet the one person God is preparing, trusting his direction even when it seems to lead nowhere?
