Joshua 24:19-23: in context

19Joshua said to the people, “You can’t serve the LORD, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins. 20If you forsake the LORD, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after he has done you good.” 21The people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the LORD.” 22Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD yourselves, to serve him.” They said, “We are witnesses.” 23“Now therefore put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel.”

At the covenant renewal, when the people eagerly promise to serve the LORD, Joshua does a surprising thing: he pushes back. You cannot serve the LORD, he says, for he is a holy God, a jealous God, who will not overlook your sins. The people insist, no, we will serve the LORD, and Joshua makes them witnesses against themselves, then presses for action: put away the foreign gods among you.

Joshua is not discouraging their faith; he is confronting easy, cheap commitment. He wants them to count the cost, to grasp that serving God is serious and cannot be done casually while still clinging to other gods. And then he demands something concrete: not louder promises but the actual removal of rival gods from their midst. Real commitment is not a warm feeling or an eager vow but the deliberate putting away of whatever competes with God for the heart. Joshua will not let them make a shallow pledge; he makes them reckon with what following God truly requires.

Has my commitment to God counted the cost and actually put away rival "gods," or is it a loud promise while I quietly cling to other loyalties?
