Hebrews 3:12-19: in context

12Beware, brothers, lest perhaps there might be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God; 13but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called “today”, lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence firm to the end, 15while it is said, “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion.” 16For who, when they heard, rebelled? Wasn’t it all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17With whom was he displeased forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18To whom did he swear that they wouldn’t enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19We see that they weren’t able to enter in because of unbelief.

The writer warns against a heart of unbelief that hardens gradually, and gives a remedy: take care, brothers, lest any of you have an evil, unbelieving heart, but exhort one another every day, as long as it is called today, so that none is hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. And he points to the wilderness generation, who heard God's word yet could not enter his rest, because of unbelief.

Sin hardens the heart not usually in one great act but through small, daily deceits, and the guard against it is community, believers encouraging one another day by day. We are not meant to keep watch over our hearts alone. And the warning is grave: hearing God's word is not enough; the word must be joined with faith, or it does not profit. The urgency lies in that repeated word, today, now, while there is still time, hold fast, and help one another hold fast, before the heart quietly grows hard and unbelief takes root.

Am I letting daily encouragement from others guard my heart against the slow hardening of sin, and am I joining what I hear with genuine faith?
