13“‘“Behold, therefore I have struck my hand at your dishonest gain which you have made, and at the blood which has been shed within you. 14Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I will deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken it, and will do it. 15I will scatter you among the nations, and disperse you through the countries. I will purge your filthiness out of you. 16You will be profaned in yourself in the sight of the nations. Then you will know that I am the LORD.”’” 17The LORD’s word came to me, saying, 18“Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to me. All of them are bronze, tin, iron, and lead in the middle of the furnace. They are the dross of silver. 19Therefore the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have all become dross, therefore, behold, I will gather you into the middle of Jerusalem. 20As they gather silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into the middle of the furnace, to blow the fire on it, to melt it, so I will gather you in my anger and in my wrath, and I will lay you there and melt you. 21Yes, I will gather you, and blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and you will be melted in the middle of it. 22As silver is melted in the middle of the furnace, so you will be melted in the middle of it; and you will know that I, the LORD, have poured out my wrath on you.’”

God's judgment on Jerusalem is pictured as a smelting furnace. Israel has become dross, the worthless residue left when silver is refined, and God says he will gather them into the midst of the city as into a furnace and melt them in the heat of his wrath, until they know that he is the LORD.

It is a severe image, but notice the metallurgy behind it: the furnace is where dross is separated from metal and the pure is recovered. Even this fierce judgment has a refining aim, to burn away what is worthless. God does not gather his people into the fire merely to destroy them; the heat is meant to purge. The pain is real, and the text states it plainly, but it is the heat of a refiner who wants to draw something pure out of the dross. Judgment, even when it is severe, serves God's deeper purpose of purifying a people for himself, so that what comes out of the furnace is silver rather than slag.

Can I trust that even God's severe dealings with me are the work of a refiner burning away what is worthless, meant to purify rather than to destroy?
