1 Maccabees 13:25-30: in context

25Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried him at Modin, the city of his fathers. 26All Israel made great lamentation over him, and mourned for him many days. 27Simon built a monument on the tomb of his father and his kindred, and raised it high so that it could be seen, with polished stone on the front and back. 28He also set up seven pyramids, one near another, for his father, his mother, and his four brothers. 29For these, he made an elaborate setting, erecting great pillars around them, and upon the pillars he made suits of armor for a perpetual memorial, and beside the suits of armor, he carved ships, so that they could be seen by all who sail on the sea. 30This is the tomb which he made at Modin. It remains to this day.

Simon gathers the bones of his brother Jonathan and buries him among their fathers at Modin, and builds a grand monument for the family, with pillars and pyramids and carvings, raised high so it could be seen from far off, even by sailors at sea. It is an act of love and remembrance for a family that had given so much in the struggle for their people's freedom.

There is something fitting in honoring those who went before, marking their sacrifice so it would not be forgotten. And yet Scripture, taken as a whole, gently reminds us that monuments of stone do not finally last; the memorials that truly endure are faithful lives, written in God's remembrance and in the good they did. Simon's tomb marked his family's devotion in polished stone; the deeper and more lasting monument is the faithfulness itself, which God does not forget. The memory of the righteous is a blessing that outlives any carved pillar.

Do I honor those who went faithfully before me, and do I seek to leave a lasting memorial not in stone but in a faithful life God remembers?
