1 Timothy 5:1-8: in context

1Don’t rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brothers; 2the elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, in all purity. 3Honor widows who are widows indeed. 4But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety toward their own family and to repay their parents, for this is acceptable in the sight of God. 5Now she who is a widow indeed and desolate, has her hope set on God and continues in petitions and prayers night and day. 6But she who gives herself to pleasure is dead while she lives. 7Also command these things, that they may be without reproach. 8But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Paul gives instructions that turn the church into a family. Treat older men as fathers, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity. The community of faith is to relate to one another with the honor, gentleness, and respect of a healthy household.

And he stresses the duty of caring for one's own. If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own family and to repay their parents, for this pleases God. Then comes the sharp word: anyone who does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Faith that does not translate into practical care for those closest to us, our own family, is exposed as hollow. Real godliness begins at home, in honoring parents, caring for relatives, and providing faithfully for those who depend on us. Love that skips over its nearest duties is not yet real.
