Genesis 29:1-5: in context

1Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east. 2He looked, and saw a well in the field, and saw three flocks of sheep lying there by it. For out of that well they watered the flocks. The stone on the well’s mouth was large. 3There all the flocks were gathered. They rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back on the well’s mouth in its place. 4Jacob said to them, “My relatives, where are you from?” They said, “We are from Haran.” 5He said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”

Jacob, sent away to find a wife and still fleeing his brother, arrives in a far country and comes to a well in a field where shepherds gather their flocks. It is a quiet, ordinary scene, but it is the beginning of God's providence unfolding for him.

Jacob simply asks the shepherds where they are from and whether they know Laban, his mother's brother, and they do. God is quietly guiding the fugitive's steps to the very place and the very people he needs. What looks like a chance stop at a random well is in fact the hand of providence, bringing Jacob to his kin, and to Rachel, whom he will meet only moments later. God often works through ordinary, seemingly random moments, a stop at a well, a casual question to strangers, to accomplish his purposes and lead his people exactly where they need to go. The fugitive did not know it, but he was standing precisely where God was leading him.

Do I trust that God is guiding my steps even through ordinary, seemingly chance moments, leading me where I need to go according to his providence?
