Jeremiah 26:1-6: in context

1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2“The LORD says: ‘Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah which come to worship in the LORD’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Don’t omit a word. 3It may be they will listen, and every man turn from his evil way, that I may relent from the evil which I intend to do to them because of the evil of their doings.’” 4You shall tell them, “The LORD says: ‘If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law which I have set before you, 5to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them—but you have not listened— 6then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.’”

God sends Jeremiah to stand in the temple court and proclaim his word to all who come to worship, and he gives a striking instruction: do not hold back a word. Jeremiah is to deliver the message in full, not softening or trimming it to make it more palatable, even though it is a hard word of coming judgment.

And the purpose behind it is mercy: it may be they will listen, and everyone turn from his evil way, that I may relent from the disaster I intend to do to them. God sends the hard word precisely in the hope of repentance. The warning is itself an act of mercy, meant to turn people back before judgment ever falls. There is a lesson here in faithfully speaking God's whole truth, not editing out the uncomfortable parts to spare people or ourselves, and in recognizing that even God's warnings spring from a desire to save. The full word, hard as it is, is spoken in love, to give people the chance to turn while there is still time.

Do I hear God's warnings as acts of mercy meant to turn me back, and when I must speak his truth, do I deliver it faithfully and in full rather than trimming away the uncomfortable parts?
