Numbers 9:8-13: in context
8Moses answered them, “Wait, that I may hear what the LORD will command concerning you.” 9The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 10“Say to the children of Israel, ‘If any man of you or of your generations is unclean by reason of a dead body, or is on a journey far away, he shall still keep the Passover to the LORD. 11In the second month, on the fourteenth day at evening they shall keep it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break a bone of it. According to all the statute of the Passover they shall keep it. 13But the man who is clean, and is not on a journey, and fails to keep the Passover, that soul shall be cut off from his people. Because he didn’t offer the offering of the LORD in its appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.
Some men, unclean because of contact with a dead body, could not keep the Passover at the appointed time, and they asked Moses whether they must simply miss it altogether. Moses inquires of the LORD, and God makes a gracious provision: anyone unclean, or away on a long journey, may keep the Passover a month later, so that no one is excluded by circumstances beyond their control.
God makes room for those who genuinely cannot keep it on time. But the same passage adds a warning: the one who is clean and not on a journey, yet neglects the Passover, is to be cut off, for he has no such excuse. The contrast is telling. God is gracious to those hindered by real circumstances, providing a second opportunity, but he takes seriously the willful neglect of worship by those with no reason for it. There is both mercy and seriousness here: God makes a way for the genuinely hindered, and yet casual disregard of him remains a grave matter.
Do I distinguish between being genuinely hindered and simply neglecting God, receiving his gracious provision for real obstacles while never treating worship of him as something to casually skip?
