1 Samuel 17:26-32: in context

26David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.” 28Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the evil of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.” 29David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?” 30He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way. 31When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him. 32David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

Young David, arriving at the camp, is struck by something the seasoned soldiers had grown numb to: how dare this Philistine defy the armies of the living God? Where the army saw an unbeatable giant, David saw an insult to God. His outrage was not at the danger but at the dishonor done to God.

And when his brother Eliab sneers at him, accusing him of pride, David does not retreat; he keeps his focus on the real issue, and finally tells Saul, let no one's heart fail; your servant will go and fight this Philistine. Two things stand out. David saw the situation through the lens of God's honor while others saw only the threat, and that changed everything; a battle that looked hopeless became, to David, a matter of God's honor being defended. And he refused to be discouraged by his brother's contempt, keeping his eyes on God. When we see our challenges as concerning God's honor rather than only our own safety, and refuse to be cowed by discouragement, we find a courage others miss.

Do I see my challenges through the lens of God's honor rather than only my own safety, and do I refuse to let others' contempt discourage me from what God calls me to?
