44The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 45“Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock; and the Levites shall be mine. I am the LORD. 46For the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel who exceed the number of the Levites, 47you shall take five shekels apiece for each one; according to the shekel of the sanctuary you shall take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs); 48and you shall give the money, with which their remainder is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons.” 49Moses took the redemption money from those who exceeded the number of those who were redeemed by the Levites; 50from the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred sixty-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; 51and Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, according to the LORD’s word, as the LORD commanded Moses.

This passage records a striking arrangement. The firstborn of Israel belonged to God, who had spared them in Egypt, and now God takes the tribe of Levi in their place to serve him; and where the firstborn outnumber the Levites, the extra ones are redeemed by a payment of silver.

Behind the accounting lies a rich idea: redemption. The firstborn owed their lives to God, and a price was paid so they could be released to their families. Each was, in a sense, bought back, redeemed at a set price. This points forward, as the whole sacrificial system does, to a greater redemption. We too belong to God, and we too have been redeemed, not with silver, but with the precious blood of Christ. The careful counting and paying here is a shadow of the truth that our lives are not our own; we have been bought back at a price, and belong to the God who redeemed us.

Do I live as one who has been redeemed at a price and belongs to God, not as one who is my own to do with as I please?
