Numbers 2:22-26: in context

22“The tribe of Benjamin: the prince of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni. 23His army, and those who were counted of them, were thirty-five thousand four hundred. 24“All who were counted of the camp of Ephraim were one hundred eight thousand one hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out third. 25“On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26His division, and those who were counted of them, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

This passage continues the careful arrangement of Israel's camp, tribe by tribe, each in its appointed place around the tabernacle, each with its leader and its counted number. Benjamin here, Dan there, the camp of Ephraim setting out third. It reads like a muster roll, and in a sense it is.

But there is meaning in the order. God placed his dwelling, the tabernacle, at the very center, and arranged all the tribes around it in a deliberate pattern, each with a known place and role. No tribe was left out, and none was left to wander at random; every one had its position in relation to God's presence at the center. There is a quiet picture here of how God orders his people. He is a God of order, not confusion, and he gives each part of his people a place and a purpose, all oriented around himself at the center. We are not meant to live scattered and self-directed, but arranged around God's presence, each with our own place in his ordered people.

Is my life ordered around God's presence at the center, taking up the place and purpose he gives me among his people, rather than wandering self-directed?
