Numbers 2:17-21: in context

17“Then the Tent of Meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps. As they encamp, so shall they set out, every man in his place, by their standards. 18“On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud. 19His division, and those who were counted of them, were forty thousand five hundred. 20“Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh. The prince of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 21His division, and those who were counted of them, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

As Israel's camp is arranged, one detail governs everything: the Tent of Meeting, the place of God's presence, is set in the very middle of the camp, with the tribes ordered around it. And the passage adds a telling phrase: as they encamp, so shall they set out, every man in his place.

Whether resting in camp or moving on their journey, God's presence stayed at the center, and the people kept their ordered places around it. There is a beautiful picture here of how life is meant to be lived. God's presence belongs not at the edge of our lives but at the center, and not only when we are at rest but also when we are on the move. Israel did not leave God's dwelling behind when they broke camp; they carried it in their midst as they traveled. So it is meant to be for us: God at the center of our settled seasons and our times of change alike, his presence in the middle of all our comings and goings.

Is God's presence at the very center of my life, in my settled seasons and my times of change alike, rather than pushed to the edge of my comings and goings?
