Matthew 26:47-51: in context

47While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss, he is the one. Seize him.” 49Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. 50Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. 51Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

Judas leads the armed crowd to Jesus and betrays him with the agreed sign, a kiss, the gesture of friendship turned into the tool of betrayal. And Jesus, receiving that traitor's kiss, says something astonishing: Friend, do what you came to do. Friend. Even in the moment of betrayal, Jesus addresses Judas not as enemy or traitor but as friend.

It is not naivety; Jesus knows exactly what Judas is doing. It is grace, a last reach of the heart toward a man who is throwing away everything, one final word that leaves the door open even now. There is something searching in that single word. If Jesus could call Judas friend at the very moment of betrayal, then no one is beyond the reach of his grace, and no betrayal closes the door he holds open. And there is a challenge in it for us who follow him. When we are wronged, even betrayed, the way of Christ is not immediate enmity but a heart that still reaches out, that leaves room for grace even toward the one who has hurt us. Jesus met betrayal with the word friend.

When I am wronged or even betrayed, can I follow Jesus, who met his betrayer with the word "friend," keeping a heart that still reaches out in grace rather than closing the door in enmity?
