Jeremiah 22:6-10: in context

6For the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are Gilead to me, the head of Lebanon. Yet surely I will make you a wilderness, cities which are not inhabited. 7I will prepare destroyers against you, everyone with his weapons, and they will cut down your choice cedars, and cast them into the fire. 8“Many nations will pass by this city, and they will each ask his neighbor, ‘Why has the LORD done this to this great city?’ 9Then they will answer, ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD their God, worshiped other gods, and served them.’” 10Don’t weep for the dead. Don’t bemoan him; but weep bitterly for him who goes away, for he will return no more, and not see his native country.

God pronounces judgment on the royal house of Judah, once flourishing like the forests of Gilead and Lebanon, now to become a desolate wilderness. And Jeremiah imagines the nations passing by the ruined city and asking, why has the LORD done this to such a great city? The answer is given plainly: because they forsook the covenant of the LORD their God and worshiped and served other gods.

The devastation was not random misfortune; it was the visible consequence of abandoning God. There is a sobering clarity here. The ruin of Judah stood as a public testimony, so that even foreigners passing by could read in it the cost of forsaking God. Turning away from him, breaking covenant with him, worshiping other things, has real and visible consequences. It is a warning against the assumption that we can abandon God and suffer no loss. The passage ends with a poignant note, telling the people to weep not so much for the dead as for those carried into exile, who will never see their homeland again, for the loss that forsaking God costs is a grief worth weeping over.

Do I take seriously that forsaking God and giving my heart to other things has real and lasting consequences, and does that sober truth keep me faithful to the covenant of the God who is my true home?
