Nehemiah 7:41-45: in context

41The children of Pashhur: one thousand two hundred forty-seven. 42The children of Harim: one thousand seventeen. 43The Levites: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, of the children of Hodevah: seventy-four. 44The singers: the children of Asaph: one hundred forty-eight. 45The gatekeepers: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai: one hundred thirty-eight.

This part of the register of returned exiles counts not only the priests and Levites but also the singers and the gatekeepers, each group listed and numbered. It is easy to pass over such a list, but notice who is included.

Alongside the priests who offered sacrifices stand the singers who led worship in music and the gatekeepers who kept the doors of the temple. Each had a role in the house of God, and each was counted worth recording. There is dignity here for every kind of service in God's work. Not everyone was a priest; some sang, some guarded the gates, humble tasks compared to offering sacrifices, yet every role mattered and every servant was numbered. God's work has always needed a variety of servants, the prominent and the obscure, the ones up front and the ones at the door, and in his eyes each is valued. Whatever our role in the service of God, whether we lead or sing or simply keep the door, it has its place and its worth.

Do I value my own role in God's work, whatever it is, and honor the varied service of others, knowing that in God's eyes the humble gatekeeper is counted no less than the prominent priest?
