Numbers 20:12-16: in context

12The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” 13These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them. 14Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “Your brother Israel says: You know all the travail that has happened to us; 15how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers. 16When we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border.

At the waters of Meribah, after Moses failed to trust and honor God before the people, God delivers a hard verdict: because you did not believe me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people, you shall not bring this assembly into the land I have given them. After forty years of leading Israel toward the promised land, Moses is told he will not himself enter it.

It is a severe consequence for a moment's failure, a mark of how seriously God takes the honoring of his holiness, even by his trusted servant. But notice what Moses does next. He does not rebel, or grow bitter, or abandon his post. In the very next verses, he is back at work, sending messengers to the king of Edom, continuing to lead the people toward a land he himself would never enter. Moses accepted God's discipline without turning away, and kept serving faithfully to the end. When God's dealings with us are hard, even when we bear consequences that feel severe, the faithful response is not bitterness or withdrawal, but a humble acceptance that keeps serving him.

When God's dealings with me are hard, and I bear consequences that feel severe, do I respond like Moses, accepting his discipline without bitterness and continuing to serve him faithfully, rather than growing resentful or withdrawing?
