1 Samuel 30:26-31: in context

26When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of the LORD’s enemies.” 27He sent it to those who were in Bethel, to those who were in Ramoth of the South, to those who were in Jattir, 28to those who were in Aroer, to those who were in Siphmoth, to those who were in Eshtemoa, 29to those who were in Racal, to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, to those who were in the cities of the Kenites, 30to those who were in Hormah, to those who were in Borashan, to those who were in Athach, 31to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.

When David recovers a great store of plunder from the enemies who had raided Ziklag, he does not keep it all for himself and his men. He sends portions of it to the elders of Judah, to his friends, and to all the towns where he and his men had roamed, saying, here is a present for you from the plunder of the LORD's enemies. He shares his blessing widely, spreading it out among many.

What stands out is David's generosity with what he had gained. He could have hoarded the plunder or kept it within his own band. Instead he sent it out to many towns and friends, sharing the blessing with those who had not fought for it. His gratitude for God's help overflowed into open-handed generosity toward others.

When God prospers us, gives us a windfall, a recovery, an abundance, the generous response is not to hoard it but to share it, spreading the blessing to others as David spread the plunder among the towns. Gratitude for what God has given naturally overflows into generosity. Those who have been blessed are meant to be a blessing, opening their hands to share what they have received.

When God prospers me and gives me abundance, do I share the blessing generously with others as David sent portions of the plunder to many towns and friends, letting my gratitude overflow into open-handedness, or do I hoard what I have received?
