Nehemiah 10:1-16: in context

1Now those who sealed were: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah, 2Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah, 3Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah, 4Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, 5Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah, 6Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch, 7Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin, 8Maaziah, Bilgai, and Shemaiah. These were the priests. 9The Levites: Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel; 10and their brothers, Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan, 11Mica, Rehob, Hashabiah, 12Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah, 13Hodiah, Bani, and Beninu. 14The chiefs of the people: Parosh, Pahathmoab, Elam, Zattu, Bani, 15Bunni, Azgad, Bebai, 16Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin,

Nehemiah has led the returned exiles through the reading of the law and a long day of confession, and now the chapter that follows does something the emotion of confession does not do on its own. The people make a firm covenant, and they write it down, and they seal it with their names. Chapter 10 is the list of those who signed, and the first name on it is Nehemiah the governor's own. Then come the priests, Seraiah and Azariah and the rest; then the Levites, Jeshua and Binnui and Kadmiel; then the chiefs of the people, Parosh and Pahath-moab and Elam, name after name.

As a passage it is a bare roster, and easy to skim. But the roster is the point. The day before, they had wept and confessed and felt the weight of their failure; here they turn the feeling into signatures. Repentance that stays a feeling can be walked back in the morning. These people put their names to it, publicly, in a document, so that the commitment had faces attached and could be held to. And the governor signed first, binding himself before he asked anyone else to sign. It is the difference between being sorry and putting your name where your sorrow can be checked.

The people turned a day of feeling into a signed and sealed commitment, names and all. What have I felt deeply and refused to put my name to, so I could still quietly walk it back?
