Obadiah 1:1-7: in context

1The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom. We have heard news from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, “Arise, and let’s rise up against her in battle. 2Behold, I have made you small among the nations. You are greatly despised. 3The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ 4Though you mount on high as the eagle, and though your nest is set among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says the LORD. 5“If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—oh, what disaster awaits you—wouldn’t they only steal until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some gleaning grapes? 6How Esau will be ransacked! How his hidden treasures are sought out! 7All the men of your alliance have brought you on your way, even to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you. Friends who eat your bread lay a snare under you. There is no understanding in him.”

Obadiah's short book opens with a message about Edom, the mountain nation descended from Esau, and it goes straight for the thing holding Edom up: its pride. You live in the clefts of the rock, God says, your dwelling set on high, and you say in your heart, who will bring me down to the ground? Edom's cities were carved into sheer red cliffs, all but unreachable, and the security of the place had become a state of mind. From up there the question who could possibly touch me answers itself. And that, God says, is the problem. The pride of your heart has deceived you.

Pride is not just an attitude here; it is a deception. It has convinced Edom of something untrue, that height is the same as safety, that a strong enough position makes a person untouchable. Though you soar like an eagle and set your nest among the stars, God answers, I will bring you down from there. And the fall comes with a twist of betrayal fitting for a nation that had betrayed its own brother: the allies Edom trusted turn on it, the friends who ate its bread set a snare under its feet, and it is plundered so thoroughly that not even the gleanings a thief would leave remain. The fortress in the rock could not save a heart that had talked itself into believing it was beyond reach.

Edom's pride had convinced it that no one could ever bring it down. Where has a strong position talked me into feeling untouchable, and what is that confidence quietly hiding from me?
