Luke 9:1-5: in context

1He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick. 3He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey—no staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money. Don’t have two tunics each. 4Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there. 5As many as don’t receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”

Jesus gathers the twelve, gives them power and authority over demons and disease, and sends them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and heal. His instructions for the trip are austere: take nothing, no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, not even a spare tunic. Stay in whatever house receives you. And where they are not received, shake the dust off their feet as they leave, as a testimony against that place.

The strange command is to travel with nothing. Jesus deliberately sends them out without provisions or backup, dependent for food and shelter on whoever will take them in. There is a lesson built into the empty pack: the mission runs on God's provision through other people's hospitality, not on the missionaries' own resources, and the vulnerability is part of the point. They go as people who need to be received, which keeps them humble and keeps the gospel's advance tied to grace rather than self-sufficiency. And then the sobering instruction about rejection, shake off the dust. They are not to argue, coerce, or linger where they are unwelcome, and they are not to carry the rejection as their own failure. They offer the kingdom, and if a town will not have it, they leave it in God's hands and move on, dust and all. The message is entrusted to them, but the response is not theirs to force.

Do I try to carry the mission on my own resources and force the response, when Jesus sends his people out dependent, humble, and free to leave the outcome with him?
