Romans 3:27-31: in context

Paul has just laid out the heart of the gospel, that all have sinned and are justified freely by grace through faith in Christ, apart from works of the law. Now he draws the conclusions in a rapid exchange of questions. Where then is boasting? Excluded. On what principle, works? No, the principle of faith. So a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Is God the God of Jews only? No, of Gentiles too, since there is one God who justifies both the circumcised and the uncircumcised by the same faith. Then do we overthrow the law by this faith? By no means; we uphold it.

Two consequences of justification by faith come out here, and both are about breaking down walls. The first wall is pride. If we are justified by faith and not by our works, then boasting is excluded, cut off at the root; no one can stand before God on the strength of their own performance, so no one has grounds to look down on anyone. Grace levels the ground. The second wall is between peoples. If righteousness came by keeping the Jewish law, then God would effectively be God of the Jews only, and the Gentiles would be second-class. But because it comes by faith, the same door is open to everyone, circumcised or not, through the one God who justifies all who believe. Faith is the great equalizer: it humbles the insider and welcomes the outsider on identical terms. And this does not discard the law, Paul insists; it establishes what the law was always pointing toward, a righteousness received rather than achieved.

Does my standing with God leave me any room to boast over another person, or has grace through faith truly leveled the ground between me and everyone else?
