2 Timothy 2:14-19: a reflection

14Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord that they don’t argue about words to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear. 15Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth. 16But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness, 17and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus: 18men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some. 19However, God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.”

Amid a warning about false teaching and empty quarreling that was upsetting the faith of some, Paul offers a steadying assurance: But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: The Lord knows those who are his, and, Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity. However much error and controversy swirl around, God's foundation is unshakable, and it is marked, as with a seal, by two truths: that the Lord knows those who are his, and that those who name his name are to turn from sin.

Notice the security Paul points to: God's firm foundation stands. In a time of confusion, false teaching, and shaken faith, there is something that does not shake, God's own firm foundation, unmoved by all the error around it. And it is sealed with a deep assurance: the Lord knows those who are his. Whatever the confusion, God knows his own; he is not confused about who belongs to him. Those who are his are known by him, held securely on a foundation that cannot be shaken.

That is a solid comfort in unsettled times. When the faith of some is being upset, when error and controversy swirl, when we ourselves may feel shaken, God's firm foundation stands, and the Lord knows those who are his. Your security rests not on your own steadiness, but on God's unshakable foundation and his knowledge of you as his own. And that assurance carries a call: those who name the Lord's name are to depart from iniquity; the knowledge that God holds us securely is not a license to sin, but a summons to holiness. Rest on the firm foundation that stands, held by the God who knows those who are his, and, being his, turn from sin. God knows you; you are held; now live as one who is his.

Lord, amid false teaching and empty controversy that unsettles faith, your word assures me that your firm foundation stands, sealed with the truth that the Lord knows those who are his. When error and confusion swirl, when the faith of some is shaken, when I myself feel unsteady, thank you that your foundation does not shake, and that you know your own. My security rests not on my own steadiness, but on your unshakable foundation and your knowledge of me as yours. Hold me securely there. And let that assurance summon me to holiness, for those who name your name are to depart from iniquity; help me, being held by you, to turn from sin. You know me; I am held on a foundation that cannot be shaken. Help me rest in that, and live as one who is yours.
